It was a large crowd, we had a good day, and we waved goodbye to Asarco and stood as a group in the photo and no one paid any of us to be there.

Of course people are making an issue fo the size. GTLO and the elected folks involved said that "no one in El Paso wants ASARCO" and that they "expected 25,000 strong to show up and stand against ASARCO."
When less than 500 show up to take a trick picture to give the impression that there were more people there than actually were, it's an issue. Especially if elected officials are deliberately lying about the numbers. They can not lie under any circumstance.
If everybody in El Paso is against ASARCO, where were they?
When you are depending on large turnout and it doesn't happen, it's a story.
